How to read this
Each tile is a state. Its color shows how that state's median hospital price compares with the median for all hospitals in the data: amber is higher, blue is lower. Hospitals in the state are counted once each, so a state with a few large systems and a state with many small hospitals are treated alike. Click a state to see its numbers and open the matching state cost page.
What this does and does not tell you
- A state's median says little about any one hospital in it. Prices inside a state often vary more than the gap between states. Use the Variability Explorer to see the spread.
- Gray tiles mean fewer than 3 hospitals publish the code, which is missing data, not a low price. Dashed tiles have 3 to 9 hospitals and are a small sample.
- These are published prices, not what you will pay. The insurer rate is the total a plan and you share, and a listed rate is not necessarily your plan's rate.
- A facility price may leave out separate bills, such as a radiologist's reading.
Common questions
Which state has the most expensive hospital prices?
It depends on the procedure. Among 64 common procedures, the state with the highest median hospital cash price is most often Florida (13), Ohio (10), California (7), and the state with the lowest is most often Maryland (9), New Jersey (9), New Hampshire (7) (the number of procedures is in brackets). No state is highest or lowest for every procedure, and a state's median says little about any one hospital in it.
How much do hospital prices differ from state to state?
For the typical common procedure, the state with the highest median cash price is about 7.0x the lowest, across states with at least 10 hospitals publishing that code. The range runs from 2.9x for the most even procedure to 41x for the most uneven.
Does a high-priced state mean every hospital there charges more?
No. Prices inside a state often vary more than the gap between states. A state median is the middle hospital, so a high-median state still has lower-priced hospitals. Use the Hospital Price Variability Explorer to see the spread among a state's hospitals.
Why are some states gray on the map?
Gray means fewer than 3 hospitals in that state publish a price for the selected code, so no price is shown. That is missing data, not a low price. States with 3 to 9 hospitals are drawn with a dashed outline as a small sample and are left out of the highest and lowest rankings.
What do the colors on the map show?
Each state is shaded by its median hospital price compared with the median across all hospitals in the data for that code. Amber is higher, blue is lower. The price is the median of each hospital's own published price for that exact CPT code.
Where do these hospital prices come from?
Federal rules require hospitals to post a machine-readable file listing cash prices and the rates negotiated with each insurer. CostKits reads those files every month and matches each price to a standard procedure (CPT) code. This page uses the October 2026 files. See the methodology page for how prices are cleaned. These are published prices, not what you will pay.
