Hospital price data · October 2026 files
Get the cleaned hospital price data
The data behind CostKits' free price tools, as monthly files you can load into Excel, a database or a model. 4,566 hospitals, 64 common procedures, 369 CPT codes and about 1.95 million price rows, covering each hospital's cash price and commercial insurer rate. The free tools stay open: the Variability Explorer, Cash vs. Insurance Explorer, Price Atlas, Scorecard and Ask the Data. The files are for people who need the underlying data.

Format and size: CSV in a single zip, about 19 MB compressed and 90 MB unzipped. Prices are in U.S. dollars. facility_id is a stable hash of the normalized hospital name, city and state, so monthly files can be joined. Coverage: hospitals in all 50 states (D.C. is not in the October files) whose price files we could match to a facility and read. Refresh: once a month, after the new hospital files are processed; the October 2026 files are the first.
Definitions
- Cash price: the hospital's median published discounted cash price for the code and setting.
- Commercial rate: the median of the hospital's negotiated rates with commercial insurers for the code and setting. Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, TRICARE and workers' compensation rates are excluded.
- One price per hospital: each hospital counts once per code, setting and rate type. Prices under $5 and likely placeholder values (below 0.1x the national median for the code) are removed.
- Missing rows: no usable price in the hospital's file for that code. A hospital may not offer the service.
Full cleaning rules: methodology.
License summary
Snapshot and Annual include a Commercial Use License. The full agreement is sent with your order, and your payment is your acceptance of it. In plain terms:
You may:
- Use the data across your organization, with no seat limit.
- Use it in client work, reports, models and analytics, and combine it with your own data.
- Publish charts, statistics and analyses derived from it, with the attribution below.
You may not:
- Resell, sublicense, publicly post or otherwise redistribute the files or a substantially similar extract. That needs an Enterprise agreement.
- Use the data to build a dataset, API or product that competes with CostKits' data products.
- Present the data, or the coverage counts, as a legal compliance rating of any hospital.
Terms that protect both of us: the data is provided as is. It comes from hospital-published files, is not verified by CostKits, and is not guaranteed accurate or complete. It is not legal, medical or financial advice. CostKits' total liability is limited to the fees you paid, and it is not liable for indirect or consequential losses. You are responsible for claims that arise from your own use or description of the data. Digital files are not refundable after delivery, except if we fail to deliver. For Annual, a breach ends the license and you delete the files. We may include identifiers in each delivery that let us trace a leaked copy. Governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut.
Attribution: for anything you publish, use "Source: CostKits analysis of hospital price transparency files, [month and year]".
Questions
Can I share the files with a client? You can share analyses, charts and results. You cannot hand over the dataset. If a client needs the data, they can buy their own license.
Is this the same data as the free tools? Yes, cleaned the same way. The files give you all of it in one place, plus the state summary and coverage tables.
Does it include the price you would actually pay? No. These are published prices. A listed insurer rate is not necessarily any one plan's rate, and a facility price may leave out separate professional bills.
A price looks wrong. Email hello@costkits.com (hospitals: providers@costkits.com) and we will check it against the source file.
